Therapyta; A Companion to Transform Immigration into a Sweet Experience
1. Immigration; A Dream That Differs from Reality
It has long been said that "the sound of the drum sounds pleasant from afar." This age-old proverb aptly describes the situation many of us face when encountering the phenomenon of immigration. The image we often envisioned of immigration—life in a developed country, unparalleled job opportunities, more freedom, and a bright future—was very different from the reality we experienced.
Millions of Iranians over the past five decades have immigrated from Iran to other countries around the world for various reasons. Some willingly and some unwillingly made this big decision, leaving behind their homeland, home, relatives, memories, credibility, and many of their meaningful and material possessions, stepping onto this winding and challenging path. This decision is perhaps the biggest and most fateful choice in many of our lives.
The question has always remained unanswered: is immigration good or not? Certainly, this question cannot be answered with a single word, as it depends on dozens and hundreds of different factors, most of which we are aware of. However, what is certain is that immigration, regardless of being good or bad, is a major transformation in one's life, accompanied by deep psychological, emotional, and social challenges.
2. The Biggest Challenge of Immigration; Unawareness and Loneliness on the Path
But the biggest problem and challenge in the fateful matter of immigration is that people often realize and understand the challenges, difficulties, syndromes, troubles, homesickness, and unspoken problems only after immigrating. In fact, they experience with their own skin and flesh what they had only heard about from afar.
At this point, things become very difficult. Being placed in a completely new and unknown environment on one hand, and the impossibility of finding solutions alone and without others' help on the other, places major obstacles in people's paths. The new immigrant faces endless questions: How do I cope with the new culture? Why do I feel lonely? Why am I not succeeding despite trying so hard? Did I make the right decision? Why am I so homesick? These questions and hundreds of similar ones occupy the immigrant's mind, and answering them alone is nearly impossible.
Thus, facing problems after immigration can ultimately bring very severe and sometimes irreparable consequences. Because certainly the "option to return" will be the last option, and individuals and families will use all their efforts to improve conditions and continue the journey.
3. Why Are Individual Efforts in Immigration Not Enough?
The important and risky point is that this effort is full of trial and error, because the psychological and social conditions of individuals outside Iran are completely new, never experienced before. Solutions that worked for us in Iran may be entirely ineffective in the new environment. Communication styles, problem-solving methods, and even stress management approaches shaped by Iranian culture may not work in the new culture.
Therefore, the probability of success and finding correct solutions without seeking help from others greatly decreases. Seeking help and consultation from uninformed people will also not have a positive effect in practice. Because those around us, especially those trapped in similar situations, do not have the necessary knowledge to save themselves or you. They may have abundant compassion and good intentions, but they lack the sufficient knowledge and expertise to provide principled and effective solutions.
As a result, these efforts, despite abundant compassion, will remain ineffective, and very rare golden opportunities will be lost in the process. As you know, some situations come to us only once. So how can we risk them with risky decisions when we have golden opportunities in life, our loved ones, credibility, health, hope, and others, and see them at risk of being lost?
